Summarize YouTube Videos with ChatGPT: The Ultimate Hack

As someone who prefers not to watch lots of video content because quite frankly I find it slow. I’m very excited about using chat GPT to summarize videos. By creating a text summary and also study notes I can quickly determine whether it’s worth my time just to watch a video. So here’s how we do that.

To summarize a YouTube video using ChatGPT, one must first obtain the transcript of the video and determine its length. ChatGPT can then be prompted to create a list of the most important topics, summarize each topic separately, and create a table of questions and answers.

To summarize a video we’re going to take just a few steps. We’re going to start with a website that lets us pull a transcript from a youtube video. Then we’re going to use a website to measure how many words there are in the text. Then we’re going to use chat GPT to summarize the text. So let’s get started!

Getting a Transcript of a YouTube Video

There’s a super easy way to get a transcript from a YouTube video. Quite frankly I’ve done it before and completely forgotten about it and I’m happy that somebody reminded me recently how to do it. This is the tried and true way to get a transcript.

Below this explanation, there are some websites that can make this process faster as long as they’re still working.

All you need to do is go to YouTube to whatever video you want to get a transcript for. And below the video, you’re going to see three dots like this.

Just click on the three dots

Then click on show transcript.

Click on the three dots above the transcript that pops up.

Then click on toggle time stamps.

Now you can just highlight the transcript using your mouse and hit CTRL-C to copy it. You’ll then use CTRL-V to paste it into the Word counter website. I’ll explain why in a little bit.

Now there are some websites that are live right now that make this just a little bit easier. You can access them here below and they’ll take care of most of the process you still need to hit CTRL-C and CTRL-V to paste the transcript into the word counter website.

Another site you can also use is

https://www.assemblyai.com/playground/models

So let’s take a look at how to use the YouTube transcript website as well.

So how do we use this website? It’s super easy you just paste the URL of the YouTube video you want a transcript of and hit go.

It really doesn’t get a lot simpler than that. So let’s take a look at the output that we get from this video made by the guys over at Income School. (By the way, I do suggest their blogging course it is well worth it.)

So you can see you can watch the video and use the text actually to jump around inside the video. That alone makes using this website worth it to me. You’ll also note that on the right-hand side, there’s a full transcript of everything spoken in the YouTube video.

Preparing the YouTube Transcript for ChatGPT

We’re going to use that transcript to create a summary using chat GPT. Now there is a problem. Chat GPT can only handle about 3,000 words at most currently in its textbox. That would normally mean that any video that created a transcript longer than that would be a problem.

You can of course cut the transcript into pieces and summarize each piece but, if you want continuity in your summary it makes life difficult. So it would be great if chat GPT could handle more than 3,000 words at a time. Fortunately, there is a way.

So let’s go ahead and take the transcript from this video and put it into another website which will count the number of words for us.

https://wordcounter.net/

This is a great simple website that counts characters and words for you in any text that you paste into it. I use it a lot for creating titles that have to be 60 characters or less for Google. I’ve also used it for creating Amazon bullets and many other reasons. It’s a nice tool.

We’re going to use it now with our transcript to go ahead and see how long it is first.

This is a short video of just over 15 minutes and it’s already at the 3000-word limit. In fact, if we put it into chat GPT and ask for a summary we’ll see that it’ll give us an error.

Not too much of a shock there. So how can we deal with that? We can ask ChatGPT to memorize a portion of the transcript. I would suggest making this a small amount of the transcript as possible maybe in our case 500 Words.

You can highlight some words on word counter and it will tell you how many words you have highlighted. You can then take those words and cut and paste them into chat GPT.

Here’s what that looks like.

Acting as an expert at creating concise but detailed summaries please use the content below and the content I asked you to you store in memory.

I would like you to follow these steps.

1) Create a list of the most important topics found in the content. Send this to me as a response.

2) Using your generated topic list, focus on each topic and summarize all the data in the content about each of those topics separately. State each topic and create a bulleted list. Send me this list as a response.

  1. Most important topics found in the content are:
  • Importance of having a certain amount of blog posts on a website to earn money
  • Monetization strategies, including ads, affiliate marketing, and digital products
  • Impact of Google algorithm updates and AI on blogging
  • Survey results of bloggers’ earnings, including hourly wages and dollars earned per post
  • Blogging as a low-risk business model
  1. Summaries for each topic:
  • Importance of having a certain amount of blog posts on a website to earn money: Based on the survey results, having more blog posts on a website results in more earnings. Bloggers with fewer than 10 blog posts earn very little, whereas those with 100-500 blog posts earn the most, averaging $41.59 per thousand page views. However, having over 500 posts on a website can cannibalize traffic from your own blog posts, resulting in lower earnings.
  • Monetization strategies, including ads, affiliate marketing, and digital products: The survey showed that monetizing with only ads results in low earnings, whereas those who combine ads with affiliate marketing earn 74% more, or $12 more per thousand page views. Bloggers who sell digital products earn 3.9 times more than those who do ads only, and 5.7 times more per blog post.
  • Impact of Google algorithm updates and AI on blogging: Changes in Google’s algorithm and the rise of AI have worried bloggers, but the survey showed no significant impact from AI so far. However, bloggers need to learn how to use AI in conjunction with human efforts to create good content.
  • Survey results of bloggers’ earnings, including hourly wages and dollars earned per post: The survey showed that bloggers’ earnings have increased by over 17% from last year to this year, despite economic factors and Google’s algorithm updates. The average hourly wage for bloggers is over $98 per hour, based on the dollars earned per post over the course of five years.
  • Blogging as a low-risk business model: Blogging has a low upfront cost compared to most other money-making methodologies, and the chances of success are not any lower than other businesses. The average hourly wage for bloggers is over $98 per hour, making it an incredible business opportunity.

Create a Table Prompt #4 (Optional)

Personally, I prefer to use the method of anticipation to learn things. I read the question on the left side and try to answer it before reading the answer on the right side. For whatever reason I find that easier to do in a table format. So here is how you can make the questions/answers into a table.

Please put this data into a table format

EXACTLY How Much Bloggers are Earning in 2023: More Than Ever
Ricky from Income School Blogging Video that We Summarized

Having listened to the content of the youtube video I have to say this is a very good summary.Take a listen and make your own decision.

Using The Summary

If you do not like sitting and watching YouTube videos or just don’t have the time to do it this method will help you save time. The combination of the topic list, the summary, and finally the table allows you to really dig into the content. If you have GPT4 the quiz is also an option but it stalls out after 5 or so questions.

Conclusions

  • We saw that it is possible to use 2 ChatGPT text boxes to get around the 3,000-word limit on how much data we can summarize at a time (bumps it up to about 6,000 words).
  • Two Prompts that allow extensive summaries were given.
  • Other prompts let us set up questions and answers about the material including putting it into a table.

I hope you find these prompts useful and good luck with your studies!
